• Making it through the holidays

From poindexter FORTRAN@21:4/122 to All on Friday, December 20, 2019 06:59:00
Times can be challenging, especially the holidays. I've gone through some challenging times over the past few years and rediscovered medidation - and wanted share my experiences.

If a busy mind, stress, anxiety, temper and sleepnessness sound familiar, meditation is a great way to clear your mind of negative thoughts, regain
your focus, and improve your state of mind.

There are guided meditation smartphone apps that walk you through specific exercises tailored to specific feelings, building mindfulness, relaxing, and improving concentration. These apps take a millenia-old practice and personalize it, make it accessible and let you track your progress.

Many people have developed simple meditation timers with some lessons built- in for free. Others charge a monthly or yearly fee that varies, but you can usually find deals on them, and all of them have trials ranging from 7 days
to 30 days to evaluate the app.

Waking Up is an app that charges a yearly fee, but also say they won't allow charging customers to prevent someone from using the app. It sounds like you could email them and ask for a waiver. It's free to use all of the lessons
for the rest of the year.

Headspace Plus is the most popular one I know of; they've received a significant round of funding and they make meditation accessible. I just finished my first year with the app and am evaluating other apps.

It's worth a try, spending 5-10 minutes a day for the next few weeks to
clear your mind and focus on your breathing is a cheap, simple, and
effective trick for gaining peace of mind.

My gf and I did some mindfulness exercises last night. It's a great way to
calm yourself and clear out the daily stressors for a little while. It's also
a great way to cure hiccups.

I never liked the word "meditation" for some reason, and don't like when
people use "spiritual" in this context either. For me, mindfulness works
well. In fact, I used to do this as a kid, without realizing it, in a dark
room with candles lit listening to some of my favorite albums and
experiencing each note with total concentration.

Thank you for sharing this. It's funny I was watching CBSN via Andriod app on my Freeview box and an advert for a meditation app came on during a
commercial break. I found myself thinking about it, the reasons for use etc. This advert was really promoting its use in terms of exercise and care of the mind in the context of athletes who focus on the physical exercise and care
    of their bodies..

It may be something I look further into during this coming year, so thanks again for the share :)

Just getting into my Saturday morning and trying to sneak in some BBSing
before I end up on a big honey-do list :)

I try that sometimes when I feel like I am moving too fast. I find it
works best when I actually say aloud what it is I am doing. Only issue
there is that it seems odd to anyone who is a witness to it, and it drys my mouth out pretty fast. :)

Great idea. :) I do meditation mostly as part of my yoga practice, but there are times I simply meditate. Definitely helps. :)
