Ok, folks.. last week I shared a link, 68k.news, that is just a news parser that displays all news sources in pure, wonderful, textm0de.

Well, I have more this week and... I want to make sure I give the credit to who deserves it.

ACTION RETRO is a youtuber with 17,000 followers - meaning, he's pretty small... I hope all of you will go add ACTION RETRO, because he's the one who developed BOTH of the links I'm gonna share today.

68k.news - Huge textm0de news parser, with tons of sources. Read the news on
any retro computer, or anywhere you want TEXT NEWS!

frogfind.com - Powered by DuckDuckGo, ACTION RETRO has coded up a fully internet 1.0 search site that allows us to branch out and go to
ANY internet-site without the web 2.0 stuff! It will display
VERY basic images; you can view these on a vintage Apple ][e; or basically ANY computer you could throw at it!

These two sites are retro-computing heaven... I hope you'll goto youtube and add ACTION RETRO; I don't think he's done just yet!

Reading this site is now part of my daily workflow, it is great to read
modern pages on a text browser and it is so fast!

I subbed and watched the video on how he coded these sites, very ingenious
use of existing tech. Hope he gets more subscribers.

Oh, totally - I'm not wizard, I just found a couple good texty links and knew where I need to share them. :P Hyjinx of Als Geek Lab (youtube) had already done a video on Frogfind when I 'told him about' the links... :P So I was late for some, but glad they found you just in time....

    Cheers.

Check out Gemini - it's like a heavier Gopher or a lighter web, and easy to mark up. Good client support and a growing userspace.

Yeah, there is a nice article about Gemini in this month's Linux Magazine. I like the fact they designed the protocol specifically to be bloat resistant.

It *is* a very nice trick. Perfect for some sites that force you
to enable adblockers before they show content. But even then,
    the results are hit'n'miss.

True, some sites only show garbled Javascript code or some ROT13-style text or nothing.

In general (without frogfind / 68k.news) I wish websites would offer better semantic markup and would work without Javascript. A few do, but most are a mess...

I browse with JS off by default. If you use Firefox or the Tor Browser Bundle, most sites you can read using Reader MOde even with Javascript turned off.

If the site is not readable without javascript I usually just skip it. I think javascript overloading is lazy design. There are legit reasons for using javascript on sites but most designs just use it for the sake of it :-(

I've been using this and I really like it, too.

Its especially awesome when used on older retro hardware... it will display an image, all the way down to Applie ][e quality. Thats really cool, to surf the web with an Apple ][. Or, you can fire up a Classic Mac OS and it works really nicely, even under emulation.

I like all these tools - just made by other retro enthusiasts like us. So coolio.

I agree with you on that point. But, for actual retro machines its much better than nothing! And, I like to offer frogfind.com to my BBS users. Its sans the images, but still a nice way for them to be able to browse the 'web'.
