Hmm well its like this, I think our 42+ day seems to have finished off my
file server. She's having thermal shutdowns every 5-20 mins, so I can't keep anything running, unfortunately she's mission critical.

I might have to see if I can actually find a better heatsink for the cpu, I'm pretty sure the one on it stock intel job isn't the correct one. Its the low height round ones that "fit" on core2's etc.. If I recall right this wanted
one of the taller ones, but... I didn't have one that was functional.

In the mean time, I'll pull it apart a little later, and clean everything out and re paste it and see what happens. Might have to splash out on better thermal compound too.

    Spec the Hot.

Well it turns out to be like this, apparently heatsinks do not work very well when they're dangling in space, no matter how clean they are or if they have thermal paste. As mentioned these are the stock Intel coolers that have the round fan mounted atop. The one I've just pulled out only had 1 corner still capable of holding it down, the other three all had broken plug sections.

So where am I, just over an hour and a half in, got it all cleaned up, pulled the mounting plugs out of the fan chassis and will be repasting and hoping to "insert your preferred divinity here" that it all goes swimmingly as I cable tie it into place.

Been using this with 2 fans on each side for years on my AMD systems: https://www.newegg.com/cooler-master-hyper-212-evo-rr-212e-20pk-r2/p/N82E168351 03099?Item=N82E16835103099

Comes with one fan...but having several...use one on each side.

As I say at work to people who ask me how much commission I make
(none)...never had a problem...except with one of the fans I replaced with another one.

There’s never enough fans or cooling you can do to a computer. You can minimize it though.

Wheeee back in business... cable ties went with a minimum of fuss, she's got some spiffy silver paste on her, and the temps are back around 56c network speed has a new lease on life, so its been struggling for a while.

The recent restarts and power outs trashed the message base(Hudson), which I've
made a copy of for now, but replaced with a backup. I don't think its going to be fixable, so far as I can see the msghdr file is now empty.

Ended up buying a box of 4 of the Cool Master 120mm fans...since it was the cheapest way...especially with already having them available. Almost bought a case for my RPi 3B+ which uses one of these to cool it on top of it.

When I found the top fan was going out & making a racket...couldn't watch TV without the volume up all the way. Now...the bar fridge in my room makes more racket when the compressor kicks on/off.

Got to ask, what do you hold it on with? The existing has the holes in the mobo... but this looks like it only has a tiny plate.... Other downside for mine is she's side on in a tower case.

Mine sits on the side. Had to check on how it was installed by doing a search.

On those like mine...there's a 2 section plate which is held onto the board
by screws running to a back plate on the back of the board. Remember when I
got this fan originally many years ago...I was worried I wouldn't be able to put the side on the case...but I have a couple of inches from the top of the fan to the side panel.

According to some of the pix I've come across...I've got mine installed "wrong". It should be sitting 90 degrees to the right with the fans facing
the front/back of the case...rather than up/down. Never had any issue since 2014 with it like this...so am not going to bother.

Ouch. I can't stand Intel's stock coolers. Those plastic mounting pegs are fragile and like to either not clip through the PCB or jam when you try to release them. If the case has room for it, there are some pretty cheap tower coolers that will both outperform the stock cooler and come with a proper backplate for mounting.

One of my main problems is my preferred shop doesn't have a large selection of choices. :) Everything in here came from the long shop on the side of the road. Wouldn't want to over capitalise.. Still you're probably right a nominal investment will probably keep everything a lot happier for a lot longer.

The fins have a ridge on each of the sides where you screw in a clip to the
fan where the clip will hold onto sides. Because of the fins on the top of
the chips...am only using one fan. If I remember right...these clips come
with the Cooler with the screws to put them onto the fan housing.
