• Remote working.

i agree with you... since im not in a position that offers work at home, i havent used any of the tools that are out there now. SLACK, RIOT, ETC...

wonder if theres a way to get into using SLACK, without having a work team to use it with... i wanna get up to speed on slack.

The rule of thumb could be if you spend at least 80%+ of your day sitting at your desk at work, there is no reason to come into the office. Basically moving your office desk to a virtual environment.

For that use case, I would say work remote 4 days and 1 day in the office (for the remainder of the 20% of work that needs physical interaction).

Some managers won't admit it, but the real reason some hold onto going into the
office no matter what is they feel they get noticed more by going in. Accomplishments means more to me than having to show my face in front of people
to feel relevant. These are just different personality traits.

I work IT for a small public school system. I will be working at home
for at least the rest of the month, but I figure there will be things
I will have to go in for. It's hard to maintain a network when I'm not
there, but at the same time, if everyone is 'not there' then it won't
be as much of an issue...

I figure some teachers will need computers fixed or replaced and I'll
do a 'curb drop off' kind of thing and go in when I need to...

My kid's school district just announced that their IT department is manning
a help line for kids and their parents schooling from home. They've loaned out Chromebooks and hotspots to whoever needs them as well, so they have a pretty significant remote population that could use help.

Yes, when things need to be physically connected there will always be the occational onsite need. What I have tried to do is group all the physical on-site stuff together and it all gets knocked out the same day. Grouping all those types of things into a single trip. Minus emergencies, of course.

That's great! My wife was on a conference 'call' with admin and
team leaders yesterday. They are doing similar things, except not
loaning things - our district isn't set up for that. So many of
the kids don't have internet at home that loaning chromebooks wouldn't
help, and we only have about 5 hot spots for the whole district.
(I have one, SPED has two, etc.)

Well yesterday I had to go and pick up some laptops to set up for
remote access for three employees, then had to go to their 'desks'
and set up their PC's to allow remote. I have the laptops here at
home and will be delivering them back as a drop off tonight or
    tomorrow...

Everyone else in the district - LITERALLY everyone else - has a
    laptop already.

Yeah, I didn't think of the loaning out hotspots thing, glad they're doing that, too. AT&T prepaid just announced that they've added in a $15 tier, and added tethering/hotspot features to their existing plans. If you have cell coverage, you could probably get a network connection for a laptop.

... How would someone else do it?

I think it's good how companies have stepped up in things like that!
