They're required to provide it air and water for free if
you purchase gas, but you're still running around trying to
fill all of your tires quickly - or having to go ask for
more time. Annoying.
One machine in my town accepts, quarters, $1 and $2 coins, and
even debit and credit card!
My car doesn't have a spare tire, so I bought a can of Fix-
A-Flat, a tire patch kit and a little 12v air compressor
with a gauge, and I love it.
I bought one those 12v air compressor emergency pumps when a 2nd
car I had had three particular tires that were too deflated to
drive safely. I managed to fill up two tires reasonably well,
but when I went to do the next tire, the motor burned out!
Piece of junk. I took it back for a refund. The manual
stipulated a duty-cycle. I honored it. I took my time with more
than the recommended cool-down time for the pump, but it still
burned out.
I know the gauge is reliable, I don't have to hurry, and I
can fill up bicycle tires without having to throw them in
the car and drive them to the gas station. It's already
paid for itself with 2 flats I've fixed on my own.
I felt the same way when I got the emergency pump - I could take
my time to fill and measure and fill and measure and fill and
measure. But I never bothered with getting another pump like
that. I just try to keep an eye on the tires.. and as soon as
they look unusually low, I wait for nice weather to plan my next
visit to one of the "pay" pumps.
I measure the pressure *before* I go to the pumps. If a tire
needs air, I keep the little cap off and store it in a pocket.
Then, when I arrive at the pay pump, I am not wasting time
unscrewing the cap from the next tire. I can just dart from one
tire to the next and maximize the air time.
