GLIDE, Ore. -- A Sutherlin man was arrested, accused of starting fires in a forest Tuesday night, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about midnight, deputies learned the Douglas Forest Protective Association had responded to a report of a fire.

Firefighters arrived to an area northeast of Glide near McComas Creek and found
a man armed with a machete, deputies said. The man wanted firefighters to give him a ride into Glide, threatening to set more fires if they didn’t.

Deputies arrived and identified the man as Jedediah Fulton, 39, of Sutherlin. He was still armed at the time, but he was eventually taken into custody.

Authorities said Fulton admitted to setting multiple fires in the area. He reportedly told deputies he had been in the forest for about three hours and was trying to get help.

Fulton was taken to the Douglas County Jail on charges of reckless burning, interfering with a firefighter and menacing.

DFPA said there were a total of six fires in the McComas Creek area, and the largest of them was about a quarter-acre in size. Altogether the fires are estimated to cover about one acre.

Crews were at the scene overnight mopping up hot spots and securing control lines for the McComas Creek Fires.
